Pampas Grass: Ornamental Grass, Flowers, Leaves, Grass Seeds And Planting

If a gardener wants to completely change the look of his/her garden, and planting seeds and waiting for flowers to grow doesn't seem like appealing ideas, then he/she could look into getting ornamental grass instead. Ornamental grass is a decorative plant that doesn't require any planting. Gardeners may get this easily, and there's quite an array to choose from. The weather in a garden's area will ultimately decide which ornamental grass type is the best. Maintaining these decorative items is easy because there's no need to rake dried leaves or pick wilted flowers off the landscape. Ornamental grasses are equally attractive and they are great substitutes for the usual leaves and blooms.

There is an assortment of ornamental grass available at any landscaping or horticulture shop, and the favorite among landscape designers is Pampas grass, a tall South American grass type colored evergreen. When speaking of grass, clumps of green stalks usually come to mind. But Pampas grass is nothing like this notion of grasses. In fact, this type of ornamental grass has flowers and grows seeds. The flowers of the Pampas grass are white in color and sway nicely in the wind since they grow quite tall.

Pampas grass was named after naturalist and German botanist Friedrich Sellow, who was dedicated to the study of South American plants. The hot climate of Latin America proved that Pampas grass is quite an adaptable plant. As a result, landscape artists often choose to decorate a garden with this kind of grass.  Caring for this type of plant is easy, and there's no need to worry about falling leaves and regular watering. Pampas grass is a wild type of perennial grass, so growing it won't be difficult and watering it won't take up much time.

While this grass is unique, there are also some drawbacks to adding it to a  garden. If left completely unattended, Pampas grass can take over a garden. In other words, it can completely overpower the harmonious combination of flowers and other plants in the garden if allowed to grow out of control. A bunch of Pampas grass can sprout over a million of seeds in its lifetime, and these seeds are easily carried by the wind. Planting this type of grass may be easy, but it can give gardeners a bit of a headache, too.

The landscaping situation that can accommodate Pampas grass the best is a large garden. Since it's a tall, aggressive grass type, it would be best to just have it in a small portion of a garden. No one can deny the exotic characteristic of Pampas grass, as it is also favored by those who specialize in flower arrangements. So, it would be ideal to keep its presence in the garden at a minimum.
