Fescue Grass is a type of ornamental grass used in landscape design and thrives best in gardens that experience cool seasons. This type of ornamental grass adapts perfectly to areas with cold climate such as Canada, but also thrives in transition zones where the season can either be too hot for cold season grasses or too cold for the warm season grasses.

Although Fescue Grass cannot thrive in the hot and dry weather that is characteristic of summer months, it does a good job of tolerating drought and disease. This type of ornamental grass germinates quickly and has a coarse texture, making it a perfect lawn grass for preventing soil erosion. Furthermore, Fescue Grass can also grow well on compacted soil and can withstand heavy foot traffic. Because of these qualities, Fescue Grass is a perfect choice for a beautiful yet functional landscape design for lawns, yards, sport venues, and play areas.

There are many varieties of Fescue Grass available for creating a landscape design on lawns and yards. The Kentucky 31 variety used to be the only variety used, but now there are many improved varieties of the Fescue Grass. Some examples are Plantation, Trimph, Rebel, Tribute, Rebel Supreme, Atlanta Blend, and Enviro. The Blue Fescue is a popular choice for landscape design in yards and perennial gardens, and is best paired with other blue or purple flowers such as Veronica and Salvia.

Fescue Grass requires regular plant care. Before planting the seeds, it is important to make sure the soil is tilled. The seeds should be planted at daytime during cooler seasons, with temperatures between 60 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The seeds should never be planted during summer since they will stop growing due to high temperatures. Fescue Grass should also be mowed at the right height, preferably an inch and a half up to two inches, and slightly longer for the blend varieties.

Since Fescue Grass cannot withstand the hot summer weather, it requires specific plant care during summer months. It must be watered regularly to prevent it from drying out and turning brown quickly. Fescue Grass lawns should also be overseeded every year (preferably during fall) to replace grasses damaged by the scorching summer heat. These important plant care tips should be observed to make sure that Fescue Grass lawns stay green and beautiful all year round.
